Cat Fly Film Festival 2019

Cat Fly Film Festival returned for its third year over the weekend of March 29th through the 31st. Previously, I worked behind-the-scenes in the production crew to insure the festival’s success, but instead attended this year as a filmmaker and guest. Two films that I worked on played on opening night; script development with Will Osigian of Trust Fall Productions for MY FATHER’S SHADOW, and Script Supervisor on Gunner Willis of dUMB Pictures’ comedy BUSTER BUSINESS.

The second day was Community Night, where my experimental sci-fi short film THE REPLICA RAID II premiered for the first time as the screening opener, with a special bumper at the end showcasing the project as “A Cat Fly Collaboration”. Somehow I managed to gather the attending crew for a group photo, captured by MOMHEART director Joe Naylor. That’s what being a Producer is all about.

The final screening on Sunday afternoon at the Fine Arts Theater was a double feature with Coki Productions projects GOOD HAIR and POP-POP IS DEAD, both of which I worked on in a producing capacity. We held a Q&A afterwards for attending cast and crew to share stories from set, which included Gunner Willis (Rory Bailey), Steve Spoon (Ranger Bailey), Brittany Jackson of craft services, myself as an Associate Producer, and ol’ Pop-Pop himself Blaque Fowler. The film will continue its festival run through the year before its eventual streaming debut.

Cat Fly has been a blessing in terms of sharing local film works with the greater Asheville film community, and friends in a celebratory environment. Asheville is full of talented flourishing artists, and it was an honor to be featured alongside them, including but not limited to my collaborators on THE REPLICA RAID II like lead actor Jeff Alexander, who was Cat Fly co-host with actor Drez Ryan, Braethun Bharathae-Lane who engineered the sound mix, composed the music, and operated sound at Cat Fly opening night, Gunner Willis who starred in POP-POP IS DEAD and upcoming short MOMHEART, and Cat Fly co-founders Brittany Jackson and Madeleine Richardson. Cat Fly Film Festival returns for its third annual event in Asheville, North Carolina from March 29th to 31st, which will see a few selected film projects played over the weekend created by myself, Ted Kendrick, along with works from friends and collaborators across the Southeast. Artificial Ink Creative will premiere THE REPLICA RAID II on Saturday, March 30th at 6pm, which opens Community Night at New Belgium Brewing as a Cat Fly Collaboration project. The film was written and directed by Ted Kendrick, and stars Jeff Alexander as a bewildered art thief, with Thomas Goddard as Director of Photography, and Braethun Bharathae-Lane on sound mixing and soundtrack.

I worked in the early development and pre-production of MY FATHER’S SHADOW short film by Will Osigian of Trust Fall Productions, and assisted as Script Supervisor on BUSTER BUSINESS, directed by Gunner Willis and Corey Wavle of dUMB. Both of these films are scheduled to play on Friday, March 29th during the Opening Night screening at the Asheville Masonic Temple. I was also an Associate Producer on POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions which is the feature film showcase playing on Sunday, March 31st, 4pm at the Asheville Fine Arts Theater.

BUSTER BUSINESS short film

Over the first weekend of September, Brittany and I traveled to Greenville, South Carolina to work on BUSTER BUSINESS, a comedy short film in the vein of Charlie Chaplin and Pixar, where a quirky man named Buster interviews for a job at Big Business. The film was written and directed by Gunner Willis and Corey Wavle, who also stars as the lead Buster, with Zach Robinson and MJ Slide as Producers.

Day one took place entirely on a sound stage at Anderson College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In the photo below, Gunner Willis directs the corporate extras who work at Big Business as an anonymous mob of black ties and briefcases. MJ Slide looks on as the 1st AD, keeping the production safe and on schedule. The rail across the room was the dolly track, which was used for many moving shots.

Corey Wavle played Buster as a timid but quick witted man with a Kurt Cobain hairstyle and taste for vintage clothes. He enters the lions’ den, totally out of his element, but when faced with unpredictable obstacles and impossible questions, Buster turns his troubles into his advantages. I was not familiar with Wavle’s acting, but knew him previously from his work as a 1st AC on GOOD HAIR THE MOVIE. Gunner Willis, the Director, is a working actor himself, who has appeared in minor roles on Netflix’s OZARK and HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS television series.

The remainder of the crew on BUSTER BUSINESS was a total pleasure to work with, and involved John Carrington (DP), Kyle Vines (1st AC), Levi Milinar (2nd AC), Thomas Propst (Sound Mixer), Rob Leonard (Boom Op), Shane McMullin (Gaffer), Diana Valerie (Makeup / Hair), Carol Flack (Wardrobe), Clayton Tilley (Production Designer), Rachel Summers (Art Design), Jamie Condon (Key Grip), Micah Taylor (Swing Grip), Tommy Schwendler (Grip), Ben Wallace (Grip), Jon Stegenga (Grip), Nina Publico (PA), Elizabeth Paige (PA), and Brittany Jackson (PA) with BTS photos by Elizabeth Kabakjian and Jordan Hawkins. Supporting actors also included Russ Wood, Joe Wilson, Bruce Green, Debbie Goodwin, Rishik Patel, and Jared Buchholz.

As the Script Supervisor, I worked closely with the Director, Gunner Willis, to note each take for script consistency as well as any visual incongruities. I kept a running log of notes which should serve as an important resource for the Editor, so they may anticipate any problems with a performance or production error in advance, and know exactly which take was best received. As one of the few people on set who actively watched the monitor for each take, I feel lucky to have such an inside perspective on how hilariously beautiful this film will be once it’s finished.

Be on the lookout for more info on BUSTER BUSINESS over the next few months as they enter post production and beyond. I expect the entire film will be completed by the end of the year with a slew of film festival screenings starting in early 2018.
