POP-POP IS DEAD premieres!

POP-POP IS DEAD is a southern comedy feature film by Coki Productions, starring Catherine Dee Holly and Fray Forde as millennial couple, Layla and Desi, who return to Layla’s hometown of Gaffney, South Carolina to mourn the loss of family patriarch “Pop Pop.” As the couple struggles to survive three days with Layla’s dysfunctional Southern family, they quickly come to learn that funerals ain’t fun.

The film premiered to a sold out audience of over 600 attendees at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia on August 29th. The event included film, stand-up comedy, improv, and music acts from a diverse selection of Atlanta’s top creative artists like comedians Hank Denson, Lace Larrabee, and Jarod Harris, and musical acts The High Divers and Babe Club by the film’s composer Corey Campbell.

I previously had the pleasure of working with Coki Productions on the GOOD HAIR short film which went on to be selected by Kevin Hart to play at the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. I joined POP-POP IS DEAD as an Associate Producer where I’m handling the film festival strategy and submission process. Any festival where the film is screened feels like a personal victory.

POP-POP IS DEAD enjoyed its west coast premiere on November 16th at the Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival, which was perfect since Kat and Fray had recently moved to LA for work opportunities, and GOOD HAIR had screened there in 2017, making Coki Productions festival alumni. I was proud they could attend so soon after the move, and get their feet wet with the LA film and comedy communities.

GOOD HAIR Fall Film Festivals

GOOD HAIR has enjoyed a successful and varied festival run this year, playing from regional roadshows, online channels, to international venues. Over the coming months, the film will be featured at the Catalina Film Festival in Los Angeles on September 30th, and the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis mid-October.

It’s going down like the Catalina Wine Mixer! If you’re in California on September 30th, take a ferry over to Catalina and check out our film at the Catalina Film Festival!

I am sure everyone involved is immensely proud of the work we accomplished by bringing Fray Forde and Kat Dee Holly’s romantic comedy to life, excited to be a part of such prestigious short film festivals, and lucky to have maintained a steady screening schedule this summer. I never expected the short film to take off the way it did. It surely isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and I shouldn’t be surprised.

Kevin Hart isn’t the only celebrity comedian showing support for GOOD HAIR. Rory Scovel also plugged the film and contest on Twitter. Scovel recently released his first Netflix special titled RORY SCOVEL TRIES STAND-UP FOR THE FIRST TIME which featured a cameo from GOOD HAIR’s Fray Forde. Scovel and Forde go way back to Greenville, SC where both launched their comedy careers. Rory’s brother Chaz, also a talented comic, was our Key PA on the set of GOOD HAIR.

Although Montreal’s Just For Laughs is the largest festival we’ve had the pleasure of participating in, GOOD HAIR had its presence felt at a number of other events this month, including the Atlanta Shortsfest on July 7th, another Comedy & Curls roadshow at the Tin Roof in Charleston on July 8th where the film was featured in the local FOX news station and Charleston City Paper, as well as the upcoming ACME Comedy Film Nights in Los Angeles, California on July 22nd, and that’s just July!

GOOD HAIR shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, so be on the lookout for more screenings near you, notably at the Comedy & Curls roadshow in Austin, Texas on July 13th at the New Movement Theater, and the San Antonio Film Festival on August 4th. Don’t forget to continue voting for GOOD HAIR in Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud contest here: contest.laughoutloud.com. Thanks for the support!
