POP-POP IS DEAD at Winter Film Awards in New York City

POP-POP IS DEAD screened on Tuesday, February 19th at the Winter Film Awards in New York City at the Village Cinema in the Lower East Side. As an Associate Producer, I flew up to the festival to represent the film, and was joined at the screening by camera operator Josh Roberts. After the screening, I was invited on stage for a Q&A segment alongside fellow filmmaker Lorena Colmenares, a New York based writer and director from Venezuela, at WFA with her black and white cult drama NINE KNOTS. Mister Fitzgerald was the MC, who asked questions about inspiration, easter eggs, and process before opening the floor up to the audience. It was a pleasure to represent Coki Productions at the Winter Film Awards, and I hope to attend again someday.

THAT 828 VIBE podcast

That 828 Vibe podcast, hosted by Julio Ortiz and Kenny Stempien, had me on to talk Artificial Ink Creative. I plugged Watchtower Database, 12th Level Intellects, STEAMPUNK EDDIE, and POP-POP IS DEAD. We also chat THE LION KING trailer, and dissect my favorite song from the original soundtrack, which naturally, I chose “Hakuna Matata.” It means, “No worries.” Listen to the episode at the link below:

POP-POP IS DEAD premieres!

POP-POP IS DEAD is a southern comedy feature film by Coki Productions, starring Catherine Dee Holly and Fray Forde as millennial couple, Layla and Desi, who return to Layla’s hometown of Gaffney, South Carolina to mourn the loss of family patriarch “Pop Pop.” As the couple struggles to survive three days with Layla’s dysfunctional Southern family, they quickly come to learn that funerals ain’t fun.

The film premiered to a sold out audience of over 600 attendees at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia on August 29th. The event included film, stand-up comedy, improv, and music acts from a diverse selection of Atlanta’s top creative artists like comedians Hank Denson, Lace Larrabee, and Jarod Harris, and musical acts The High Divers and Babe Club by the film’s composer Corey Campbell.

I previously had the pleasure of working with Coki Productions on the GOOD HAIR short film which went on to be selected by Kevin Hart to play at the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. I joined POP-POP IS DEAD as an Associate Producer where I’m handling the film festival strategy and submission process. Any festival where the film is screened feels like a personal victory.

POP-POP IS DEAD enjoyed its west coast premiere on November 16th at the Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival, which was perfect since Kat and Fray had recently moved to LA for work opportunities, and GOOD HAIR had screened there in 2017, making Coki Productions festival alumni. I was proud they could attend so soon after the move, and get their feet wet with the LA film and comedy communities.

MOMHEART crowdfunding campaign

Lately I’ve been producing independent film projects like the comedy feature POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions, which recently made its film festival debut on November 16th at the LA Comedy Film Festival, and the MOMHEART short film entering production from December 1st-3rd in Asheville, North Carolina.

MOMHEART is a dark comedy with sci-fi elements about an impressionable and childlike man named Gavin, who moves into his very first apartment. He has never known the love of a real family since losing his mother at an early age so he reluctantly turns to FamNi Inc., a shady family rental service, to fill the void in his heart. The film stars Gunner Willis (Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS), and is written and directed by filmmaking duo The Joes, Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino.
