LEGACIES Special // “Prebirth”

LEGACIES OF THE DCAU returns for a special six-pager entitled “Anno Domini: Prebirth”. Anno Domini means “the year of our lord” in Latin, which informs the AD in our society’s current calendar listing. The issue was released on June 21st, 2019, which the Watchtower Database team deduced was the exact canonical date that Bruce Wayne retires from being Batman based on a BATMAN BEYOND promotional comic issue retelling the events of the cartoon’s premiere episode “Rebirth, Part 1.” The issue was pencilled by Marcelo Millicay with the cover art by Rick Celis.

“Prebirth” occurs prior to the opening scene in BATMAN BEYOND’s first episode, and reveals what Bruce Wayne was doing mere hours before his final night as Batman. Between appearances by Jim Gordon, Veronica Vreeland, and Derek Powers, the issue is ripe with Gothamites whose stories could use a little more fleshing out before the beginning of BATMAN BEYOND. This particular issue of LEGACIES had various coloring duties shared by James Strecker and Mark Daniel Martinez, lettering by myself which insures my script stays in tact, with story editing input from James Strecker and Mattie Washburn. The promo video also featured music by Adam Mullen. “Anno Domini” is the overarching title given to special issues set within the year 2019. Provided all goes to plan, expect more chapters within the “Anno Domini” arc before the year is up.

12th Level Intellects: Expectations for “Justice League”

James Strecker and I recently debuted the first episode of our new podcast 12TH LEVEL INTELLECTS, named after the DC Comics term for a cosmic genius, and an offshoot from the fan theory discussions of the same name we recorded for the WATCHTOWER DATABASE. We focus the conversation specifically on niche topics relating to DC Comics and DC Animation. Adam Mullen composed the intro music.

We hope to release an episode every other week where we discuss relevant news, comic book recommendations, and dive into a random topic, the first being our expectations for the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE feature film. MillarWorld 2017 Annual Contest

I’ve made the habit now of participating in various writing contests over the last three years, though comic contests have always been my favorite. MillarWorld’s 2017 Annual Contest was both the second year it’s been held and my second year to participate. MillarWorld is an imprint of comics from writer Mark Millar, known for the KICK-ASS series, Marvel’s CIVIL WAR, and SUPERMAN: RED SON. Millar is also the creative liaison between Marvel Comics and 20th Century FOX’s superhero film franchises such as X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR, and DEADPOOL.


MillarWorld’s Annual Contest asks writers and artists to take Mark Millar’s intellectual properties and write a short story set around the events of the original series. Though I suspect the contest is an avenue for MillarWorld to sell more comics, I have always found it a satisfying test in terms of the research involved required to write characters who are slightly more obscure and unfamiliar to the casual reader. In 2015, I entered a script entitled CHRONONAUTS: THINK DIFFERENT about a pair of time travelers who give Steve Jobs the idea for the iPod.

This year, I wrote about HUCK, a small-time superhero composite of Superman and Forest Gump. HUCK was originally created by writer Mark Millar and artist Rafael Albuquerque. The series log line is described as such: “In a quiet seaside town, Huck uses his special gifts to do a good deed each day. His neighbors return the favors by keeping his abilities a secret. But when a newcomer alerts the media, a firestorm erupts, sending Huck on an adventure that will change everything.”


My entry entitled HUCK: FROM SOUP TO NUTS featured Huck in a soup kitchen where he serves everyone at super-speed. One man asks for monetary assistance, and Huck obliges only to watch him throw it away on pointless pursuits. It was difficult to present Huck in a light that didn’t come across as bully, but genuinely upset that people waste his help. Fortunately, I was lucky to have constructive feedback from editors Jason Buchanan, James Strecker, and Adam Mullen.

HUCK: FROM SOUP TO NUTS was not a winner, but I still found it a worthy effort and challenging assignment. The script is available to read upon request.

PROJECT MINUTE PIGEON // intro

Since last April, I’ve been working as an Editor on an independent comic series I’ll call Project Minute Pigeon for now. Minute Pigeon is a high concept, space spaghetti western epic written by Adam Mullen and illustrated by Mike Lombardo.

What is a space spaghetti western epic, you may ask? Just accept such a dusty, noodly description for what it is and let it whet your appetite and expectations. Providing everything goes according to plan, you’ll be able to read issue #1 in print or digital means within a year or so.

VIREALITY // feature film

VIREALTY is a feature film by James Strecker, a filmmaker from Eugene, Oregon who produces a comedy sketch channel on YouTube called JTS Entertainment. The film stars actors James Strecker, Nicholas Rylands, Joe Scott, Jon Freeman, Scott Steele, and Will Violette with an original soundtrack scored by Adam Mullen of Musica Atomica.

VIREALITY is intended to be the culmination of every video James has uploaded to his channel over the last six years, bringing together all of the characters from his various skits in a parallel universe shattering epic. In fact, that all becomes a part of the plot when James himself discovers his YouTube content actually exists in its own plane of reality, though under siege by the evil warlord Goo’ghal, a not so sly commentary on the overreach of a certain tech company.

I provided edits for VIREALITY shortly after the first draft was completed and left enough fingerprints behind to earn myself a Co-Writer credit. VIREALITY probably went through four major edits or so with James and I trading PDFs back and forth with comments as we do with additional feedback and suggestions from Micah Dugan, Jon Freeman, and Will Violette.

An Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign was launched a few months later where James secured a little over $1,500 for financing out of a $6,000 goal, so roughly a quarter of the desired budget. James is gearing up for production on the CGI heavy segment that takes places in the digital world of “The Tube” and is still welcoming donations on his personal website.

Half of the film, which takes places in the “real world,” was shot last year over two weeks in Oregon. The actors in this segment were playing themselves, all recurring talent from previous videos by JTS Entertainment. These scenes are well into post-production with the more expensive and intricate segments of VIREALITY set in the digital world of “The Tube” prepped for 2017.
