Featured Films in Cat Fly 2019

Cat Fly Film Festival returns for its third annual event in Asheville, North Carolina from March 29th to 31st, which will see a few selected film projects played over the weekend created by myself, Ted Kendrick, along with works from friends and collaborators across the Southeast. Artificial Ink Creative will premiere THE REPLICA RAID II on Saturday, March 30th at 6pm, which opens Community Night at New Belgium Brewing as a Cat Fly Collaboration project. The film was written and directed by Ted Kendrick, and stars Jeff Alexander as a bewildered art thief, with Thomas Goddard as Director of Photography, and Braethun Bharathae-Lane on sound mixing and soundtrack.

I worked in the early development and pre-production of MY FATHER’S SHADOW short film by Will Osigian of Trust Fall Productions, and assisted as Script Supervisor on BUSTER BUSINESS, directed by Gunner Willis and Corey Wavle of dUMB. Both of these films are scheduled to play on Friday, March 29th during the Opening Night screening at the Asheville Masonic Temple. I was also an Associate Producer on POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions which is the feature film showcase playing on Sunday, March 31st, 4pm at the Asheville Fine Arts Theater.

MOMHEART production wrap

MOMHEART short film directed by The Joes (Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino) wrapped production on Saturday, February 16th. We filmed a few pick-up scenes left from the previous production last December 1st to 3rd, starting at an apartment complex before moving to a park location in West Asheville for a gory grilling sequence. Gunner Willis (Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS, and POP-POP IS DEAD) is Gavin, a childlike man who turns to a shady family rental service to fill the void in his heart left from never knowing real family.

The second shoot crew had The Joes as co-directors, Madeleine Richardson as 1st AD, Aaron Shirley as Director of Photography, Ted Kendrick as Producer, Braethun Bharathae-Lane as Sound, John Morse as PA, with Jeffrey DeCristofaro and Herbert Ellis as the two Goons, and introduces and features George Romero as Francisco. MOMHEART has wrapped principal photography, and now enters post-production.

THE REPLICA RAID II poster

THE REPLICA RAID II experimental short film is nearing completion with just another few weeks of post-production before it’s ready to head out on the festival circuit. In the meantime, the film needed a poster, which I designed myself. Hopefully I will add a few laurels to the poster before all is said and done.

MOMHEART production

The MOMHEART short film went into production from December 1st to 3rd in Asheville, North Carolina. Artificial Ink Creative produced the dark comedy with The Joes directing duo of Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino. Our three days of filming passed by quickly and ultimately went unfinished. Another pick-up day has been scheduled for February to complete the project, and capture the final scenes.

The film stars Gunner Willis (actor native to Greenville, SC with credits in Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS, and POP-POP IS DEAD) as Gavin, a childlike and impressionable man, who moves into his first apartment. He has never known the love of a real family since losing his mother at an early age so he reluctantly turns to FamNi Inc., a shady family rental service, to fill the void in his longing heart.

Additional cast included Asheville acting staples such as Jennifer Trudrung, Jeffrey DeCristofaro, Franklin Lovingood and Lauren Davis, as well as newcomers Delroy Hartley, George Romero, and Herbert Ellis. Our crew was led by Madeleine Richardson as 1st AD, and an excellent camera department including Aaron Shirley and Rome Widenhouse. We were also joined by Braethun Bharathae-Lane (Sound), Mark Sundara (Stunt Coordinator), John Lauterbach (Makeup/Effects), Colston Byrd of Battery Powered Hooker Boots (Art Director), John Elder (Grip), with Rebekah Babelay and Nick Belvin as Production Assistants, among others.

Expect more news and information pertaining to the MOMHEART short film in the coming months throughout 2019, and for now, enjoy all of the behind-the-scenes photography captured by Marisa Muldoon during the initial days of production.

MOMHEART crowdfunding campaign

Lately I’ve been producing independent film projects like the comedy feature POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions, which recently made its film festival debut on November 16th at the LA Comedy Film Festival, and the MOMHEART short film entering production from December 1st-3rd in Asheville, North Carolina.

MOMHEART is a dark comedy with sci-fi elements about an impressionable and childlike man named Gavin, who moves into his very first apartment. He has never known the love of a real family since losing his mother at an early age so he reluctantly turns to FamNi Inc., a shady family rental service, to fill the void in his heart. The film stars Gunner Willis (Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS), and is written and directed by filmmaking duo The Joes, Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino.

At the moment, we are gathering our resources, and aim to raise a modest $2000 for production– so close to the goal! –and currently accepting donations over Indiegogo: (https://igg.me/at/Momheart/x). If you can’t donate, you can support our efforts by sharing the campaign over social media. The Joes and I appreciate any measure of support in spreading the word and gathering an audience.

THE REPLICA RAID II production wrap

THE REPLICA RAID II wrapped principle photography on Saturday, July 7th. We were lucky to have the same overcast weather as the first day of shooting on May 20th, so the continuity of the film should remain in act, despite production being a month and a half apart. I don’t recommend approaching filmmaking that way, but when you are working with a limited budget and crew,  sometimes you must succumb to strict scheduling. We redid some minor car sequences, and then the fun stuff we didn’t get to try last time: playing with colored photography smoke, and handbrake sliding a car into a cul-de-sac. Over and over again. For both.

The short is currently in post, where it is being edited by Madeleine Richardson, also the 1st AD on set. THE REPLICA RAID II is a sequel to my experimental short film THE REPLICA RAID which was filmed in fall 2016, and released in spring 2017, and in itself, a project that I reworked from a concept I first attempted in college.

Dip into the ARTIFICIAL INK

Artificial Ink Creative, LLC is a limited liability company for creative services, specializing in the development and production of trans-media entertainment and intellectual properties, as well as an ever-evolving, experimental project hub to track the visionary endeavors of Asheville, NC based storyteller Ted Kendrick.

Artificial works are produced by people, rather than occurring organically in nature. When breaking away from blueprints, mankind acts as little gods; sometimes in the collaborative spirit of the Greek Pantheon, else-when in the efforts of Artifice, where the fabric of reality can warp in the act of sublime craft. Never strictly Official, always Art, or better; Artificial.

Ink is the liquid used to flow ideas to fruition through writing, drawing, and printing, as well as the verb that solidifies a business contract, and the abbreviation for Incorporated. Artificial Ink Creative merges the worlds of Ink and Inc., and creates Something out of Nothing with digital content from a quality Quill, whether that pen is formed by feather, porcupine, or toothpick.

Ted Kendrick has served as a Creative Executive at Social Construct Films, Marketing Coordinator for Cat Fly Film Festival, and Marketing Director for Escapist Comix. He was an Associate Producer on feature film THE SONG OF SWAY LAKE, and Producer on short film GOOD HAIR with Coki Productions. He contributes to the Watchtower Database as a host on the 12th Level Intellects podcast, and writer on webcomic LEGACIES of the DC Animated Universe. Ted holds a B.A. in Literature from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
