Artificial Ink in 2020 Film Fests

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most film festivals are postponing their events or switching to an online streaming format. Artificial Ink Creative worked on a few creative projects that have recently been selected for screening in late May 2020, particularly Cat Fly Film Festival‘s “Cat Fly and Chill” event as well as ConCarolinas Short Film Festival, not to mention festival strategy work for other filmmakers.

“Cat Fly and Chill” is the latest event from Cat Fly Film Festival, originally intended as a three day screening in Asheville, North Carolina, though now rescheduled as an online streaming event. Ted Kendrick assisted Kira Bursky in extras casting and festival strategy for BEAUTIFUL MESS short film which plays on the first day, May 29th. The second day on May 30th will showcase multiple film projects produced by Ted Kendrick including the DOUBLE AGENT short film which was also written and directed by Kendrick, MOMHEART short film starring Gunner Willis and directed by Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino, as well as the “Elevator Went” music video for the Asheville based band Wyla which was directed by Rome Widenhouse.

THE REPLICA RAID II short film starring Jeff Alexander was written, directed, and produced by Ted Kendrick, and will play at the 2020 ConCarolinas Short Film Festival, which is traditionally paired with a comic and gaming convention in Charlotte, NC but will stream online this year in response to the pandemic. THE REPLICA RAID III final installment is in pre-production with the hope to film ASAP.

Follow both Cat Fly Film Fest and ConCarolinas Short Film Festival on social media for more information on the upcoming screening schedules, and tune in to the online livestreams at the end of May 2020 in an effort to support indie filmmaking.

BUSTER BUSINESS short film

BUSTER BUSINESS was a comedy short film written and directed by Gunner Willis, starring Corey Wavle, with cinematography by John Carrington. I participated as a Script Supervisor during its production in September 2017 at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which is where I was first introduced to Gunner Willis, who would later star in the MOMHEART short film and POP-POP IS DEAD web-series which I both produced. Watch the full short film embedded below.

BUSTER BUSINESS originally premiered at Cat Fly Film Festival in March 2019 before it eventually dropped online in October 2019. The film ended up being a huge springboard for local networking in the area. Check out a behind-the-scenes photo below taken by Diana Valerie of MoXie Makeup and Hair with (from left to right) myself Ted Kendrick, director Gunner Willis, actor Corey Wavle, Art Director Clayton Tilley, and 1st AD MJ Slide all gathered around the video village monitor during the opening black and white “Big Business” commercial sequence.

Headshots by The Joes

The Joes directing duo of Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino promised me some professional headshots as part of my payment for producing the MOMHEART short film. We captured these photos in late July 2019 at various places in Asheville, North Carolina. I knew that I wanted highly detailed black and white textured photos in a controlled interior space, which occurred at the Grey Eagle venue in the immediate photos below. Afterwards, we walked throughout downtown to collect candid shots. I was very impressed with the Joes’ work, and always grateful for updated headshots, which are critical for the freelance creative arena.

THE REPLICA RAID II // production

THE REPLICA RAID II short film went into production on Sunday, May 20th, 2018, and everything was going on schedule until the infamous WNC summer rain interrupted the afternoon. Despite the setback, the sequel to my 2017 experimental project THE REPLICA RAID took some big steps towards actualization. We have a second day of production set for July where we will create the final elements.

The day would not have been a success without my excellent crew, particularly Thomas Goddard (Dir. of Photography), Cat Wityk (Line Producer), Madeleine Richardson (1st AD), Brittany Jackson (1st AC), Braethun Bharathae-Lane (Sound), Ethan Saut (Stunt Driver), Haley Martin (Location Manager), Betsabe Fregoso Lee and Joey Lee with Peak of the Mountain Productions (Drone Operators), and Production Assistants: Daniel Ballard, Erich Reinhard, and Garin Wilson of Wilson’s Productions who captured the amazing behind-the-scenes photos below.

Be on the lookout for more about THE REPLICA RAID II over the next few months, and you never know…maybe we’ll see THE REPLICA RAID III sometime in 2019.

CAT FLY HALLOWEEN 2017

Cat Fly Halloween was held on Friday, October 13th at UpCountry Brewing in West Asheville, North Carolina. The event sold out days in advance, and was a wonderful follow up to last spring’s inaugural Cat Fly Indie Film Festival, which was founded and curated by Brittany Jackson, Madeleine Richardson, and Cat Wityk. UpCountry Brewing hosted the screening in their tasting room, and provided a special craft beer for the event, the Cat Fly Witches Brew, a blonde ale infused with cinnamon.

These photos are from the step-and-repeat at the entrance of Cat Fly Halloween. Feel free to tag yourself and your friends and share around!

One of the films that I recently produced, AS ONE FLESH, played with an array of other horror and thriller shorts from across North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and the Southeast region. Additional cast and crew also attended, such as writer and director Joe Naylor, cinematographer Madeleine Richardson, lead actor Jeff Alexander, supporting actors Franklin Lovingood and James Martin, soundtrack composer and sound engineer Tony Mozz, lighting tech Brittany Jackson, editor Thomas Goddard, and makeup artist Ashton Helton, just to name a few, many of whom were also volunteers or programming staff for Cat Fly. I couldn’t have been more excited to share the night with such an awesome gathering of filmmakers.
