The Joes directing duo of Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino promised me some professional headshots as part of my payment for producing the MOMHEART short film. We captured these photos in late July 2019 at various places in Asheville, North Carolina. I knew that I wanted highly detailed black and white textured photos in a controlled interior space, which occurred at the Grey Eagle venue in the immediate photos below. Afterwards, we walked throughout downtown to collect candid shots. I was very impressed with the Joes’ work, and always grateful for updated headshots, which are critical for the freelance creative arena.
The MOMHEART short film directed by The Joes and produced by Artificial Ink Creative LLC premieres at The Big Fancy event hosted by Sly Grog Lounge in Asheville, NC on Saturday, July 6th. The festival is one night only with a $10 cover, and fancy dress code, however best interpreted, for a night to be remembered.
The Big Fancy will also feature additional short films including another recent Artificial Ink Creative project THE REPLICA RAID II, and multiple album releases by local Asheville-based bands, some of whom contributed to the MOMHEART soundtrack such as Battery Powered Hooker Boots and Mike Anderson. Other musical acts will include Half-State, Lil’ Loswer and GLitch SLap, among others.
Additional shenanigans on site at Sly Grog Lounge will include breweries, CBD farmers from Clover who will set up a Dab Tent, retailers from Griftown Screen Printing, burlesque performances from Erin Trixi and Theresa Coggiola, live record cutting by American Vinyl, and “Live Food From Scratch” by La La Diabla.
Cat Fly Film Festival returned for its third year over the weekend of March 29th through the 31st. Previously, I worked behind-the-scenes in the production crew to insure the festival’s success, but instead attended this year as a filmmaker and guest. Two films that I worked on played on opening night; script development with Will Osigian of Trust Fall Productions for MY FATHER’S SHADOW, and Script Supervisor on Gunner Willis of dUMB Pictures’ comedy BUSTER BUSINESS.

@catflyfilmfest is always full of surprises. thankful to attend this year as a guest rather than behind-the-scenes production crew. congrats to all of the featured films I was lucky to be a part of; @just_gubnet with #BusterBusiness, @willosigian with #MyFathersShadow, @cokiproductions with #PopPopIsDead and #GoodHair, and my own short #TheReplicaRaid♊️. now it’s time to get back to work. #catflyfilmfest #catfly #catflyordie #filmfestival #filmmaking #filmpremiere #shortfilm #ncfilm #avlfilm #ashevillefilm #ashevillenc #ashevillearts
The second day was Community Night, where my experimental sci-fi short film THE REPLICA RAID II premiered for the first time as the screening opener, with a special bumper at the end showcasing the project as “A Cat Fly Collaboration”. Somehow I managed to gather the attending crew for a group photo, captured by MOMHEART director Joe Naylor. That’s what being a Producer is all about.
The final screening on Sunday afternoon at the Fine Arts Theater was a double feature with Coki Productions projects GOOD HAIR and POP-POP IS DEAD, both of which I worked on in a producing capacity. We held a Q&A afterwards for attending cast and crew to share stories from set, which included Gunner Willis (Rory Bailey), Steve Spoon (Ranger Bailey), Brittany Jackson of craft services, myself as an Associate Producer, and ol’ Pop-Pop himself Blaque Fowler. The film will continue its festival run through the year before its eventual streaming debut.

Braethun Bharathae-Lane isn’t on social media, but he deserves a shoutout for being my go-to sound guy over the last year. His name may be a made up language, but he is as real as they come. Thanks for being a great collaborator and friend! #catflyordie #filmfriends #soundengineer #thereplicaraid #collaborator #avlfilm #ncfilm #avlart
Cat Fly has been a blessing in terms of sharing local film works with the greater Asheville film community, and friends in a celebratory environment. Asheville is full of talented flourishing artists, and it was an honor to be featured alongside them, including but not limited to my collaborators on THE REPLICA RAID II like lead actor Jeff Alexander, who was Cat Fly co-host with actor Drez Ryan, Braethun Bharathae-Lane who engineered the sound mix, composed the music, and operated sound at Cat Fly opening night, Gunner Willis who starred in POP-POP IS DEAD and upcoming short MOMHEART, and Cat Fly co-founders Brittany Jackson and Madeleine Richardson. Here’s to more events, memories, lessons, and films.
MOMHEART short film directed by The Joes (Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino) wrapped production on Saturday, February 16th. We filmed a few pick-up scenes left from the previous production last December 1st to 3rd, starting at an apartment complex before moving to a park location in West Asheville for a gory grilling sequence. Gunner Willis (Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS, and POP-POP IS DEAD) is Gavin, a childlike man who turns to a shady family rental service to fill the void in his heart left from never knowing real family.
The second shoot crew had The Joes as co-directors, Madeleine Richardson as 1st AD, Aaron Shirley as Director of Photography, Ted Kendrick as Producer, Braethun Bharathae-Lane as Sound, John Morse as PA, with Jeffrey DeCristofaro and Herbert Ellis as the two Goons, and introduces and features George Romero as Francisco. MOMHEART has wrapped principal photography, and now enters post-production.
The MOMHEART short film went into production from December 1st to 3rd in Asheville, North Carolina. Artificial Ink Creative produced the dark comedy with The Joes directing duo of Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino. Our three days of filming passed by quickly and ultimately went unfinished. Another pick-up day has been scheduled for February to complete the project, and capture the final scenes.
The film stars Gunner Willis (actor native to Greenville, SC with credits in Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS, and POP-POP IS DEAD) as Gavin, a childlike and impressionable man, who moves into his first apartment. He has never known the love of a real family since losing his mother at an early age so he reluctantly turns to FamNi Inc., a shady family rental service, to fill the void in his longing heart.
Additional cast included Asheville acting staples such as Jennifer Trudrung, Jeffrey DeCristofaro, Franklin Lovingood and Lauren Davis, as well as newcomers Delroy Hartley, George Romero, and Herbert Ellis. Our crew was led by Madeleine Richardson as 1st AD, and an excellent camera department including Aaron Shirley and Rome Widenhouse. We were also joined by Braethun Bharathae-Lane (Sound), Mark Sundara (Stunt Coordinator), John Lauterbach (Makeup/Effects), Colston Byrd of Battery Powered Hooker Boots (Art Director), John Elder (Grip), with Rebekah Babelay and Nick Belvin as Production Assistants, among others.
Expect more news and information pertaining to the MOMHEART short film in the coming months throughout 2019, and for now, enjoy all of the behind-the-scenes photography captured by Marisa Muldoon during the initial days of production.
Lately I’ve been producing independent film projects like the comedy feature POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions, which recently made its film festival debut on November 16th at the LA Comedy Film Festival, and the MOMHEART short film entering production from December 1st-3rd in Asheville, North Carolina.
MOMHEART is a dark comedy with sci-fi elements about an impressionable and childlike man named Gavin, who moves into his very first apartment. He has never known the love of a real family since losing his mother at an early age so he reluctantly turns to FamNi Inc., a shady family rental service, to fill the void in his heart. The film stars Gunner Willis (Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS), and is written and directed by filmmaking duo The Joes, Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino.
At the moment, we are gathering our resources, and aim to raise a modest $2000 for production– so close to the goal! –and currently accepting donations over Indiegogo: (https://igg.me/at/Momheart/x). If you can’t donate, you can support our efforts by sharing the campaign over social media. The Joes and I appreciate any measure of support in spreading the word and gathering an audience.

AS ONE FLESH is the horror short film that I produced over the summer, which was written and directed by J.W. Naylor, starring Jeff Alexander, Victoria Rae, Franklin Lovingood, and James Martin. Although the short film recently premiered at Cat Fly Halloween in Asheville, North Carolina on October 13th, we are now prepping to submit the film to other festivals, both domestic and international.
The film will also be available for online streaming within the next few weeks. When wading through the festival circuit, I believe it is always helpful to attach an attractive and engaging poster to submissions. Vincent Secary provided art and design on the poster for AS ONE FLESH. Find it embedded below via Instagram.
Cat Fly Halloween was held on Friday, October 13th at UpCountry Brewing in West Asheville, North Carolina. The event sold out days in advance, and was a wonderful follow up to last spring’s inaugural Cat Fly Indie Film Festival, which was founded and curated by Brittany Jackson, Madeleine Richardson, and Cat Wityk. UpCountry Brewing hosted the screening in their tasting room, and provided a special craft beer for the event, the Cat Fly Witches Brew, a blonde ale infused with cinnamon.

One of the films that I recently produced, AS ONE FLESH, played with an array of other horror and thriller shorts from across North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and the Southeast region. Additional cast and crew also attended, such as writer and director Joe Naylor, cinematographer Madeleine Richardson, lead actor Jeff Alexander, supporting actors Franklin Lovingood and James Martin, soundtrack composer and sound engineer Tony Mozz, lighting tech Brittany Jackson, editor Thomas Goddard, and makeup artist Ashton Helton, just to name a few, many of whom were also volunteers or programming staff for Cat Fly. I couldn’t have been more excited to share the night with such an awesome gathering of filmmakers.

I’m excited to announce that AS ONE FLESH, the short film I recently produced, will premiere at the event. The film was written, directed and edited by Joe Naylor, starring Jeff Alexander, Victoria Rae, Franklin Lovingood and James Martin, with an original score and sound mixing by Tony Mozz. It’s a fun demented mess of a movie, and I can’t wait for a live audience to watch its first time on screen.
