POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions, which began as a 60 minute dramatic comedy feature film, is now available to stream online with Vimeo in an updated web-series format that chops the feature into four episodes running about 15 minutes each. The film premiered in August 2018 at the Buckhead Theater in Atlanta, and enjoyed a successful festival run over the year with screenings at LA Comedy Film Festival, Winter Film Awards in New York City, and a special encore event at Cat Fly Film Festival 2019. Binge watch the entire web-series now!
Cat Fly Film Festival returned for its third year over the weekend of March 29th through the 31st. Previously, I worked behind-the-scenes in the production crew to insure the festival’s success, but instead attended this year as a filmmaker and guest. Two films that I worked on played on opening night; script development with Will Osigian of Trust Fall Productions for MY FATHER’S SHADOW, and Script Supervisor on Gunner Willis of dUMB Pictures’ comedy BUSTER BUSINESS.

@catflyfilmfest is always full of surprises. thankful to attend this year as a guest rather than behind-the-scenes production crew. congrats to all of the featured films I was lucky to be a part of; @just_gubnet with #BusterBusiness, @willosigian with #MyFathersShadow, @cokiproductions with #PopPopIsDead and #GoodHair, and my own short #TheReplicaRaid♊️. now it’s time to get back to work. #catflyfilmfest #catfly #catflyordie #filmfestival #filmmaking #filmpremiere #shortfilm #ncfilm #avlfilm #ashevillefilm #ashevillenc #ashevillearts
The second day was Community Night, where my experimental sci-fi short film THE REPLICA RAID II premiered for the first time as the screening opener, with a special bumper at the end showcasing the project as “A Cat Fly Collaboration”. Somehow I managed to gather the attending crew for a group photo, captured by MOMHEART director Joe Naylor. That’s what being a Producer is all about.
The final screening on Sunday afternoon at the Fine Arts Theater was a double feature with Coki Productions projects GOOD HAIR and POP-POP IS DEAD, both of which I worked on in a producing capacity. We held a Q&A afterwards for attending cast and crew to share stories from set, which included Gunner Willis (Rory Bailey), Steve Spoon (Ranger Bailey), Brittany Jackson of craft services, myself as an Associate Producer, and ol’ Pop-Pop himself Blaque Fowler. The film will continue its festival run through the year before its eventual streaming debut.

Braethun Bharathae-Lane isn’t on social media, but he deserves a shoutout for being my go-to sound guy over the last year. His name may be a made up language, but he is as real as they come. Thanks for being a great collaborator and friend! #catflyordie #filmfriends #soundengineer #thereplicaraid #collaborator #avlfilm #ncfilm #avlart
Cat Fly has been a blessing in terms of sharing local film works with the greater Asheville film community, and friends in a celebratory environment. Asheville is full of talented flourishing artists, and it was an honor to be featured alongside them, including but not limited to my collaborators on THE REPLICA RAID II like lead actor Jeff Alexander, who was Cat Fly co-host with actor Drez Ryan, Braethun Bharathae-Lane who engineered the sound mix, composed the music, and operated sound at Cat Fly opening night, Gunner Willis who starred in POP-POP IS DEAD and upcoming short MOMHEART, and Cat Fly co-founders Brittany Jackson and Madeleine Richardson. Here’s to more events, memories, lessons, and films.
Cat Fly Film Festival returns for its third annual event in Asheville, North Carolina from March 29th to 31st, which will see a few selected film projects played over the weekend created by myself, Ted Kendrick, along with works from friends and collaborators across the Southeast. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the Cat Fly website. Please say hello and chat if we cross paths at the festival!
Artificial Ink Creative will premiere THE REPLICA RAID II on Saturday, March 30th at 6pm, which opens Community Night at New Belgium Brewing as a Cat Fly Collaboration project. The film was written and directed by Ted Kendrick, and stars Jeff Alexander as a bewildered art thief, with Thomas Goddard as Director of Photography, and Braethun Bharathae-Lane on sound mixing and soundtrack.
I worked in the early development and pre-production of MY FATHER’S SHADOW short film by Will Osigian of Trust Fall Productions, and assisted as Script Supervisor on BUSTER BUSINESS, directed by Gunner Willis and Corey Wavle of dUMB. Both of these films are scheduled to play on Friday, March 29th during the Opening Night screening at the Asheville Masonic Temple. I was also an Associate Producer on POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions which is the feature film showcase playing on Sunday, March 31st, 4pm at the Asheville Fine Arts Theater.
POP-POP IS DEAD screened on Tuesday, February 19th at the Winter Film Awards in New York City at the Village Cinema in the Lower East Side. As an Associate Producer, I flew up to the festival to represent the film, and was joined at the screening by camera operator Josh Roberts. Coki Productions had me take over their Instagram profile page @cokiproductions to post stories from the festival. View my own NYC story posts from my personal Instagram profile @ted.kendrick.
After the screening, I was invited on stage for a Q&A segment alongside fellow filmmaker Lorena Colmenares, a New York based writer and director from Venezuela, at WFA with her black and white cult drama NINE KNOTS. Mister Fitzgerald was the MC, who asked questions about inspiration, easter eggs, and process before opening the floor up to the audience. It was a pleasure to represent Coki Productions at the Winter Film Awards, and I hope to attend again someday.
That 828 Vibe podcast, hosted by Julio Ortiz and Kenny Stempien, had me on to talk Artificial Ink Creative. I plugged Watchtower Database, 12th Level Intellects, STEAMPUNK EDDIE, and POP-POP IS DEAD. We also chat THE LION KING trailer, and dissect my favorite song from the original soundtrack, which naturally, I chose “Hakuna Matata.” It means, “No worries.” Listen to the episode at the link below:
POP-POP IS DEAD is a southern comedy feature film by Coki Productions, starring Catherine Dee Holly and Fray Forde as millennial couple, Layla and Desi, who return to Layla’s hometown of Gaffney, South Carolina to mourn the loss of family patriarch “Pop Pop.” As the couple struggles to survive three days with Layla’s dysfunctional Southern family, they quickly come to learn that funerals ain’t fun.
The film premiered to a sold out audience of over 600 attendees at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia on August 29th. The event included film, stand-up comedy, improv, and music acts from a diverse selection of Atlanta’s top creative artists like comedians Hank Denson, Lace Larrabee, and Jarod Harris, and musical acts The High Divers and Babe Club by the film’s composer Corey Campbell.
I previously had the pleasure of working with Coki Productions on the GOOD HAIR short film which went on to be selected by Kevin Hart to play at the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. I joined POP-POP IS DEAD as an Associate Producer where I’m handling the film festival strategy and submission process. Any festival where the film is screened feels like a personal victory.

POP-POP IS DEAD enjoyed its west coast premiere on November 16th at the Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival, which was perfect since Kat and Fray had recently moved to LA for work opportunities, and GOOD HAIR had screened there in 2017, making Coki Productions festival alumni. I was proud they could attend so soon after the move, and get their feet wet with the LA film and comedy communities.
Lately I’ve been producing independent film projects like the comedy feature POP-POP IS DEAD by Coki Productions, which recently made its film festival debut on November 16th at the LA Comedy Film Festival, and the MOMHEART short film entering production from December 1st-3rd in Asheville, North Carolina.
MOMHEART is a dark comedy with sci-fi elements about an impressionable and childlike man named Gavin, who moves into his very first apartment. He has never known the love of a real family since losing his mother at an early age so he reluctantly turns to FamNi Inc., a shady family rental service, to fill the void in his heart. The film stars Gunner Willis (Netflix’s OZARK, HBO’s VICE PRINCIPALS), and is written and directed by filmmaking duo The Joes, Joe Naylor and Joe Pellegrino.
At the moment, we are gathering our resources, and aim to raise a modest $2000 for production– so close to the goal! –and currently accepting donations over Indiegogo: (https://igg.me/at/Momheart/x). If you can’t donate, you can support our efforts by sharing the campaign over social media. The Joes and I appreciate any measure of support in spreading the word and gathering an audience.
